Bucks Harbor Pursuit Preformance Cruise and raft up

For those interested in comparing their sailing performance with others, we will try the following procedures.  We will use this
as a trial run to improve these procedures.  No Race Committee, no starting or finish lines.  No marks to round or pass on a
particular side.  To help eliminate the difference in the speed of different boats, we will sail in a pursuit format - each boat
shall pass close aboard Nun 2 at the entrance to Stockton Harbor at a time based on her rating so that all boats should arrive
at RW Bell EG at the same time.  Use the table below to determine your starting time.  Each boat shall record her time when Bell
EG is abeam close aboard.  In the spirit of cruising and learning about sailing performance, several rules are modified.  See
section below titled “Modifications to the Racing Rules of Sailing.”  If you plan to participate, please email Butch Minson with
the boat's name, description and sail number.  (email address: butch@sailstockton.net)

If you have a PHRF Rating, look up on the table below to determine your start time.  If you will sail with different sails than
your rating is based upon, adjust your rating based on the below section titled “Modifications to PHRF Rating Rules”.   If you
do not have a PHRF rating, contact Butch Minson (email address: butch@sailstockton.net) with the make and model of your boat and
if your boat is a rare or unusual design, also provide detailed information such as displacement, ballast length, waterline
length, height and width of main, mizzen, fore triangle, LP of largest jib, type of spinnaker (symmetrical or asymmetrical). and
if you have roller furler for your headsail, etc.

The raft up should be an excellent opportunity for sailors to exchange ideas to improve their sailing performance.

Modifications to the Racing Rules of Sailing

Rule 26 Starting Races – There will be no signals.  The race shall be a pursuit race with each boat assigned a time to start.
The sequence begins with the start time for a boat rating 330 PHRF.  Each faster boat shall wait her assigned start time.  Each
competitor shall be completely behind the starting buoy and pass the buoy close aboard after her assigned number of minutes has
elapsed.  Before the weekend starts, competitors shall determine from the attached table her start time for each day.

Rule 28 Sailing the Course – There are no marks to observe or pass on a particular side.  Competitors may choose any course to
pass close aboard the finish point.  Each competitor shall record her finish time and share the information with all other
competitors.

Rule 41 Outside Assistance – Boats may receive unsolicited instructions about sail trim, weight placement, tactics, and
strategies from another competitor.  Intent:  help everyone learn about sailing

Rule 42.3 Exceptions to the Propulsion Rules – After 1630 (4:30PM) Engines may be used without penalty

Rule 52 Manual Power – Auto pilots and powered winches may be used

Rules 60 through 64 Protests – After anchoring for the evening, the skippers involved shall discuss the facts and rules.  If they
can not come to an agreement resolving all conflicts, they shall each pick a competing skipper to mediate.  If  that fails, all
skippers involved must participate in the evenings social activities.

Modifications to PHRF Rating Rules

1.  Sailing without spinnaker:  base ratings for each boat make/model
include symmetrical or asymmetrical spinnakers, if sailing without
spinnaker:
     a.  without symmetrical spinnaker
Masthead - add 30 to rating
Fractional - add 24 to rating
     b.  without asymmetrical spinnaker
Masthead - add 21 to the rating
Fractional - add 15 to the rating
2.  Sailing with larger or smaller jib:  If sailing with a jib larger or
smaller (rating for most make/model boats are based on a LP of 155%) than
the base rating for your make/model boat, adjust your rating for LP greater
or smaller than 155% using the table below - if sailing without spinnaker,
double the following:
     180  - subtract 9
     170's - subtract 6
     160's - subtract 3
     150's - no change
     140's - add 3
     130's - add 6
     120's - add 9
     110's - add 12
     less than 110 - add 15
3.  Roller furling jib -  base ratings include standard equipment for boats.
If your boat is not built with roller furliung for the jib and it was added
as an option or modified after deliver, add 6 to your rating.
